the sunset turned the world to gold the moon came up, the air got cold and I rode my car on cruise control all the way to Austin I’ve been down on the city squares and the Dallas bars and the county fairs singin’ off those anxious cares all the way to Austin high, low, we’ll take the road that leads you down toward Mexico so hold me darlin’ and don’t let go all the way to Austin I’ve been on that road since I was a child back and forth for thirty miles and it sure could take a little while gettin’ all the way to Austin traffic far as I can see brother won't you pray for me 'cause I drive Highway 183 all the way to Austin (chorus) city lights all fade behind I got sleeping on my mind and I try to stay between the lines all the way to Austin turn the dial on the radio and it sounds like San Antonio they're singin’ in in a language I don’t know all the way to Austin (chorus) the clock rolled to the dead of night and I breathed so hard with all my might with that doggone seatbelt buckled tight all the way to Austin now I’ve had long nights on the road and I’ve gotten stuck in travel mode but it's just another lonely episode all the way to Austin (chorus)

fifteen hours, Midwest to the sea solid ground has been my friend Ozark gravel, Boot-heel backroads carried me down to where land ends I been livin’ in the middle of a land so wild and free lookin’ up to the silver planes flyin’ over me never thought I’d say it but there’s no place I’d rather be than livin’ in the middle, livin’ in the middle and I’ll miss her soul when it’s my time to leave high on the prairie, feel that Kansas wind blowin’ cross the landscape of my soul greener pastures, sweet slow river bend feed that wide Missouri, let it roll let it roll (chorus) she’s far behind me now, time took me away but still those skies are in my heart streaks o’ lightning, prairie thunder let me sleep beneath those stars (chorus)

lonely fields prairies wakened by the wind so many miles to the line blue-eyed skies roads and rails without an end so many miles to the line sunflower plains sunflower plains someday my darlin will be mine time will bring new horizons round the bend and maybe with some peace of mind and i will stay wide awake to comprehend all those miles to the line sunflower plains sunflower plains someday my darlin will be mine far apart still my heart grows fonder every single day from this side of the world the wait is long but it cannot divide between us our time will come and now i cry in an airport in L.A. wishing you were by my side but i will wait and till the sun brings in the day we'll tread those miles to the line sunflower plains sunflower plains someday my darlin will be mine sunflower plains sunflower plains someday my darlin you'll be mine

no matter where I go no matter how I smile no matter who I talk to and no matter my style no matter what my schedule no matter who my friends there’s nothing very special when the long day ends, it’s just me and my piano, me and my piano me and my piano, all night long now if you try songwriting it ain’t all that exciting but it sure does feels inviting with the lights down low if you need some inspiration just write for night’s duration till the bright inauguration of the morning glow, just like me and my piano, me and my piano me and my piano, all night long I played Chopin real softly and then some old Tchaikovsky creative juice and coffee kept me out of bed with songs that wax satiric blue and atmospheric but I got this silly lyric runnin' through my head it's just me and my piano, me and my piano me and my piano, all night long well Chanticleer’s a’crowin’ the eastern sky’s a glowin’ and the neighbor’s are a-goin' off to work oh, night time is a’ fleetin’ it’s the hour of breakfast eatin' and this song I’ll keep repeatin' till I go berserk, it’s been me and my piano, me and my piano me and my piano, all night long

there’s places I’ve been I won’t go again. mmmm, mmmm, mmmm edge of the earth so perfect it hurts mmmm, mmmm, mmmm seek out the good of your neighbor open your heart for the stranger but there once was a spell at the Driskill Hotel I was left to myself and a bottle the walls were too thin as the noise drifted in nighthawks out pinning the throttle waking every sleeping soul forever I’ll dream of your eyes with that gleam mmmm, mmmm, mmmm we have not reached the end of this beach mmmm, mmmm, mmmm watch where you’re keeping your treasure lose your life, keep it forever and I watched a live band from my native land steeped in the sadness of longing found my ears wishing for your boots on that floor to dance till the morning was dawning I was far too young to cry oh, there’s places I’ve been I won’t go again mmmm, mmmm, mmmm edge of the earth so perfect it hurts mmmm, mmmm, mmmm mmmm, mmmm, mmmm mmmm, mmmm, mmmm mmmm, mmmm, mmmm

she don’t laugh and sass me like she used to she don’t go out of her way to say hello and talk she don’t want to ride with me 'round Houston but maybe she don’t hate me after all maybe she don’t hate me after all even though the things I did always turned out wrong so maybe she don’t hate me, maybe she don’t hate me no, maybe she don’t hate me after all she smiled when I told a funny story she said she liked the way I played on my guitar she didn’t try to walk off in a hurry so maybe she don’t hate me after all maybe she don’t hate me after all even though the words I said always came out wrong so maybe she don’t hate me maybe she don’t hate me no, maybe she don’t hate me after all well I wish that I could tell her that I’m sorry  that I don’t really feel for her the way that I recall but I might just be wasting time with worry  ‘cause maybe she don’t hate me after all maybe she don’t hate me after all even though the things I did always turned out wrong maybe she don’t hate me after all even though the things I did always turned out wrong so maybe she don’t hate me, maybe she don’t hate me no, maybe she don’t hate me after all oh maybe she don’t hate me, maybe she don’t hate me no, maybe she don’t hate me after all

Chattanooga 04:59
the night came creepin’ in like fog upon the mountain set the orange lights on the trucks aglow the jake brakes and the engines started growlin’ truckers tryin’a take the downgrade slow and the people finished what they had in Nashville an off-ramp led ‘em safe back to their homes I drifted to the side and felt a rumble that shook me to the marrow of my bones oh Chattanooga, lights in the valley twinklin’ like the stars oh Chattanooga, it’s just too dark to see where you are I knew a man who swam the mighty Mississippi Minnesota down to Louisian’ but he could not fight the current from his whiskey and he drowned in just a puddle in Cheyenne seems the tide of war can leave you with a victory but the battlefields are never far behind well babe I know you don’t believe my story but I swear it was true in my mind [refrain] and the mountain air bit me with a shiver blowin’ me across that Georgia line and it felt like I was swimmin’ down that river to fight the battle for the thousandth time well honey this entire world is filled with strangers it’s mighty hard to tell a friend from foe and I can’t explain how joy can fade to anger but I’m prayin that you’ll never have to know

I rolled in to Boone County  one June evening all alone and I was hearin’ Dylan singin’  a thousand miles from his home and downtown CoMo was a fine place just like you had often said and in the blue room you gave this traveler a place to rest his weary head there’s more joy that we have laughed for than a thousand jokes and tales and there’s more hope that you have given than I needed to fill these sails and there is more that you have bought me than a meal at any restaurant and there is more that you have taught me than I can measure in a song so fare thee well, o Columbia, and fair Missouri, adios got bluebonnets for my heartstrings but I got them prairies in my soul and I may live a life of leavin' and never learn to say goodbye but every time I shall remember that it ain’t no shame to cry

she says she likes the skyline there in Austin town she loves that drive to Midland even when the grass is brown she tells me Texas is a fine place and she wants to put down roots but girl you don’t become a native just ‘cause you bought boots I’ve been through Mississippi, and I’ve seen Memphis too I drove all the way to Pittsburgh just to get away from you and with every mile down the road, one thing I’ve come to know — America’s my backyard, but Texas is my home now the band upstairs they hollered when that song was done they thought they did a damn good job, and they sure had their fun but I’ll pay ‘em just to take the Greyhound down where songs are real and I’ll give ‘em the full treatment of squeeze-box and pedal-steel I’ve been through Kansas City, and I’ve seen Tulsa too I drove all the way to Pittsburgh just to get away from you and with every mile down the road, one thing I’ve come to know - America’s my backyard, but Texas is my home so when that sun is slipping in the western sky and I want to chase it out the door to find some better life just let me go to drive a while, then call me when it’s time and everything will be sweeter when I cross back through the line I’ve been through Kansas City, and I’ve seen Memphis too I drove all the way to Pittsburgh just to get away from you and with every mile down the road, one thing I’ve come to know - America’s my backyard, but Texas is my home

darlin’, why you cryin’? there ain’t nothin’ sad darlin’, why you cryin’? there ain’t nothin’ sad the wind is howlin’ like a lovesick man those days are over now and here you stand: the greatest fortune I could ever have — so will you stay with me? is anything so lonesome as moonlight on the snow? is anything so lonesome as moonlight on the snow? if you have other places you must go like snowflakes fallin’ to the earth below I’d miss you more than you could ever know — so will you stay with me? hear the world a’singin' every time it spins? do you hear the world a’singin' every time it spins? the day I met you and forever since my heart’s been covered by your fingerprints oh, no I don’t believe in accidents so will you stay with me?
